Omnicane has been one of our clients/partners since 2018. They are one of the leading companies in the sugarcane industry in Mauritius. Their activities encompass sugarcane cultivation & harvest, sugarcane milling & refining, energy production and bioethanol distillation. Joshua Desjardins, the General Manager of Retail Production at Omnicane International Trading Ltd, recently gave us his impressions on the positive aspects of carton packaging on Omnicane’s distribution & supply chain. Joshua also shared some valuable insight about the effects of the 2019 pandemic on the supply chain.

Joshua, tell us about the effect that carton boxes have on the distribution of your products.
Carton boxes are an essential type of secondary packaging. They facilitate the storage of products and provide sufficient protection during the distribution process. Carton is also a good material for shelving products. Its versatility makes it an ideal material to use across supply chains. It is also a sustainable type of packaging and helps reduce the amount of plastic used compared to shrink wrapping alternatives.

Why did Omnicane choose Dakri Cartons as a packaging supplier?
Dakri Cartons has a reputation for providing good service. We have continued our collaboration because of your reliability, timely deliveries and quality of your packaging. There is also always good communication between our businesses.

What would you say is Dakri Cartons’ most practical aspect?
Your flexibility and consistency in quality. Be it for new or smaller orders, the quality of your boxes remains the same.
How did the Covid-19 pandemic affect your supply chain and product distribution?
It was a challenge because of the increase in most raw material prices. However, it was also an opportunity to provide consumers with helpful products. We developed a new range of hand and surface sanitisers called DINA CARE. We also noticed an increase in the orders of specific products, especially in March and April of 2020. There was panic buying by local consumers during this period, and certainly less imported competitive products at that time. Underlining the “Made in Moris” and local partnerships resilience.

Omnicane integrates energies
A key aspect of Omnicane’s production and operations is the company’s cyclical and integrated use of by-products as raw materials for other products. For example, they use molasses, a by-product of their raw sugar and refined sugar operations, to produce bioethanol. This type of by-product use and waste management solution is essential to their company mission. It is only logical that they make good use of carton packaging in their supply chain.
