The Good Shop
The Good Shop is a non-profit social enterprise which aims at contributing in three main areas: environment, employment and education. Established in December 2018, it is the first social enterprise of its kind in Mauritius. Through their activities, the enterprise aims at improving the environment while funding employment and education initiatives.
The Good Shop works in partnership with various other organisations and individuals. Together, they help reduce waste pollution by extending the life of goods and investing in circular solutions for product renewal. They collect various items from clothes and accessories, toys and games, books, kitchenware and household textiles to furniture, decorations, sports equipment as well as electronics. Some of theses items are given a facelift in their workshop before they are put on sale or given to other charities. The latter are then responsible for their redistribution. They also provide a repair service in their shops for clothing that need mending.
The Good Shop also provides opportunities to the most vulnerable. Through their employment and education programs, they offer jobs and scholarships. The revenue generated from the resale of the second hand items funds these social programs. Two shops are open : one in Calebasses and another one in Curepipe. 60% of their employees are individuals and communities that face barriers to employment. At The Good Shop they are provided with support, training and a living wage. Through the scholarship fund, children from inherited poverty and hardships have the opportunity to receive private education from primary and secondary schools.
